According to a Gallup survey, over 70% of Americans oppose construction of AI data centers in their area. Only 7% strongly support them. Opposition to data centers is even stronger than to nuclear power plants, which peaked at 63%.
Among opponents, 50% cited impacts on water and electricity resources as the top concern. A Pew survey also found that 43% view data centers as a major reason for rising power bills.
Opposition is strongest among Democrats (75%), followed by independents (74%) and Republicans (63%). Other reasons include quality-of-life, cost-of-living, pollution, and negative views of AI.
Supporters mainly cite job opportunities (55%). Maine's governor vetoed a moratorium on data center construction, citing jobs.
